First run of the television film DOWN TO THE DEPTHS OF BAIKAL and presentation of 2011 projects of the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal took place in Ulan-Bator (Mongolia).

On May 12, 2011, the first run of the television film DOWN TO THE DEPTHS OF BAIKAL dubbed in Mongolian took place in the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Ulan-Bator (Mongolia). The event was held with the assistance of the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal (FPLB), Embassy of the Russian Federation in Mongolia, Mongolian National Public Television, Mongolian Academy of Sciences and Regional Office of Rossotrudnichestvo (Federal Agency for Affairs of the Commonwealth of Independent States).
The Fund’s delegation was headed by the Chairman of the FPLB’s Board of Trustees and Head of METROPOL Group Mikhail Slipenchuk, Vice-President of the FPLB and International, Regional and Public Relations Director of IFC METROPOL Bair Tsyrenov, and FPLB Director Boris Danilov. The visit of the FPLB’s delegation to Mongolia included a meeting with President of Mongolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.

The first run of the film and ceremonial events summarizing the results of the Mir Submersibles In Lake Baikal research expedition were attended by Gan-Erdene (Director of the Science and Technology Fund of Mongolia), Viktor Samoylenko (Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Mongolia), Tatyana Dumnova (Minister of Economy of the Republic of Buryatia), Bair Angaev (Minister of Natural Resources of the Republic of Buryatia) and other officials.

The television film DOWN TO THE DEPTHS OF BAIKAL was created by the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company with the assistance of Mongolian National Public Television. The audience had the opportunity to admire extremely beautiful underwater shootings made by MIR vessels, as well as picturesque Baikal sceneries. The film is planned to be demonstrated on the Mongolian television. The event also included the research conference Lake Baikal – Treasure of the World with participation of the leading Russian and Mongolian scientists, Baikal-related photographic exhibitions and art contests, and also presentations of specialized publications. The research conference aimed to give coverage to the most important discoveries made in the course of the Mir Submersibles In Lake Baikal expedition organized in 2008-2010 by the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal. It was for the first time in the history of Baikal studies that two deep submergence manned vessels (DSMV), MIR-1 and MIR-2, bottomed Lake Baikal. President of Mongolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj was one of the distinguished hydronauts.

Then, the main FPLB projects for 2011 were presented. During the press conference held after the presentation, the participants answered the questions of Russian and Mongolian mass media representatives and spoke about the prospects of further cooperation between the two countries in the field of environmental protection.

“In addition to outstanding scientific discoveries made in the course of the Mir Submersibles In Lake Baikal expedition (accumulations of gas hydrates on the bottom of the lake, etc.), we believe that one of the most important results of the Mir Submersibles In Lake Baikal Project is that we managed to bring the problem of preserving the unique lake to the attention of not only scientists and politicians in Russia, but also of the general public worldwide,” noted the Chairman of the Fund’s Board of Trustees M.V. Slipenchuk in his speech.
