The North Star Order was instituted in 1936.

According to the Regulation on Orders and Medals of the Mongolian People’s Republic (approved by Decree No. 26-27 of the Presidium of the Lesser Khural and Council of Ministers of Mongolia, dated 16 May 1941), the North Star Order of the Mongolian People’s Republic is awarded to soldiers, officers and political commissars of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Army (MPRA), servicemen of the border guard of the Ministry of Interior, shepherds, workers, clerks and other citizens who have achieved outstanding success in strengthening the MPRA’s military power, improving the country’s defense potential, developing the agricultural, cultural and health sectors.

The North Star badge is an oval shield coated with silver-tinted gray-blue enamel.

The badge is ringed with a golden border of embossed rays, which widens closer to the bottom. In the middle is a red five-pointed star, with sun rays in the three bottom corners and red banner poles in the two top corners. The star is decorated with a Soëmbo coat of arms. Each banner features two syllables of the old Mongolian alphabet, coated with white enamel. One more letter is situated on the central ray in the bottom corner. These letters are an abbreviation of the words Bugd, Nairamdah, Mongol, Ard, Uls, which are translated “Mongolian People’s Republic”.
